Canadian Construction Safety Council (CCSC) July 1st, 2026, Type 2 Hard Hat with Integrated Chin Strap – Mandatory on all CCSC Member Construction Sites

While several CCSC member companies currently require the use of Type 2 hard hats for both company and trade partner personnel, this communication confirms that by July 1, 2026, the use of Type 2 hard hats with integrated chin straps, will be mandatory across all CCSC member construction sites.

All personnel including trade partners & visitors will be required to have & wear a Type 2 hard hat with manufacturer-approved four-point integrated chin strap while working on CCSC member construction sites. The class of Type 2 hardhat must be appropriate for the hazards encountered and the certification must meet local regulatory requirements e.g, CSA and/or ANSI certification.

This change is being implemented because traumatic brain injuries account for approximately 25% of all construction-related fatalities, over half of which result from falls, especially from ladders, roofs, and scaffolding. Additional causes include falling objects and struck-by incidents. Research consistently shows that Type 2 hard hats, especially those with integrated retention systems, offer greater protection and help reduce the risk of serious or fatal head injuries in the following ways:

  • Enhanced Protection: Type 2 hard hats provide protection against both vertical and lateral impacts, making them essential for dynamic construction environments. Virginia Tech research findings show a 34% and 65% reduction respectively on the probability of concussion & skull fracture when wearing a Type 2 hard hat.
  • Secure Fit: Integrated chin straps help ensure the hard hat stays in place during slips, falls, high winds, or while working in awkward positions—providing reliable protection when it’s needed most.
  • Dropped Object Prevention: Properly secured hard hats reduce the risk of becoming a falling object hazard.

In the coming weeks and months, you can expect to receive further communication from CCSC member companies on their respective implementation routines to assure all trade partners and visitors on construction projects meet the July 1st effective date.

Any questions on the foregoing can be directed to your contact(s) at the organizations noted below and/or leave a message at the CCSC website: https://canadianconstructionsafetycouncil.com/

We encourage all industry organizations to join the CCSC in mandating Type 2 hard hats with an integrated chin strap on all construction sites.

Thank you for your cooperation and support in driving safety forward.
